Enriched Family Roundup: Resources for Youth and Parents on Consent, Puberty, Friendship, Gender Identity, & Sex Education

The month of February seems like a perfect time for this Enriched Family roundup on consent, puberty, friendship, feelings, gender identity, & sex education resources for youth and parents. There are many fantastic resources to help support parents’ and caregivers’ conversations about these topics in age-appropriate, affirming, and non-shaming ways. There are also lots of resources specifically for youth that are appropriate at different age levels. So, after doing my research, I want to share with other parents and caregivers.

Reading these resources with your kids can start conversations and let your children know you are open to their questions. As with all resources, parents and caregivers should review the materials first to be sure they are suitable for your specific child and family.

Enriched Family Holiday Gift Guide 2021

The holidays are a wonderful time to find thoughtful gifts for our loved ones, but this time of year can also be overwhelming. Add on likely shipping delays due to global supply chain issues and Hanukkah arriving on the heels of Thanksgiving this year, I figured parents could use some gift idea help. With this thought in mind, I have created the third annual Enriched Family Holiday Gift Guide (for kids - up to tweens/teens). In this feature, I’ve updated previous years’ posts and included new ideas. I’m sure y’all already know the list of toys that your kids are clamoring for, so I have focused largely on educational and experience gifts, along with some great graphic novel, book, and magazine recommendations. I have tried to include gifts at a variety of price points. Please note, I have included links to Amazon (where available) simply for ease of finding and pricing the various gift ideas (not affiliate links). Many of these gifts can be found locally as well. I have girls (ages 9 and 12), so some of the gift ideas are informed by their interests, but most suggestions would be great for all kids.

Enriched Family Back-to-School and Work Special Feature

Back-to-school is upon us. Many of you parents may also be returning to the office for the first time since the pandemic. Given all of these new beginnings in the very specific time period of an ongoing pandemic, I wanted to create a special "Back-to-School & Office" blog post as I understand this transition may be a bit bumpy for us all. A key way that our family eases transition anxiety is through preparation and organization. I hope the Enriched Family Back-to-School and Back-to-Office Checklists are helpful to your family. Not all the steps will apply, particularly if your kiddos are starting out remote, but hopefully the checklists are good templates that you can adjust to your family’s needs. I have also highlighted a few Enriched Family blog posts from years past that will be helpful during this time of transition. Pick and choose what is relevant to you today …. Finally, check out the Enriched Family Quick Picks and the special discount on services we are running in August and September.

Enriched Family February 2021 Austin Activities List

Hey Austin Families! We made it to February. Whew, January was a l-o-n-g month. With nicer weather, I am sure we are all wanting to get out of the house and enjoy some sunshine with our kiddos. At the same time, we are still at Stage 5 in Austin-Travis County and Travis County residents are currently considered to be at “extremely high risk” of contracting COVID. Given this, for the time being, I will continue to emphasize family activities that can be done virtually or socially-distanced/outdoors in Austin for these monthly posts. As usual, I have focused on educational, cultural, and fun activities that are both free and fee-based so that you can choose the best fit for your family. Enjoy a geocaching challenge; engage in a wide variety of STEM events and activities (check out a virtual Girlstart Starry Night or participate in UT Girl Day or the UT-Austin Texas Science Festival virtually); participate in a virtual workshop or book club addressing racial equity; celebrate Black History Month online with the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center’s Black History Month Kid’s Day; enjoy a virtual concert, storytime, or play; or explore outdoor fun at Dreamland, Sweet Eats Fruit Farm, or the Wildflower Center. In the highlighted resource section, I have included additional ideas for celebrating Black History Month with your children.

Enriched Family January 2021 Austin Activities List

Hi friends! Never have I been so happy to say Happy New Year! As I write this, Austin-Travis County is currently at Stage 5 (the highest level) for Covid-19 community risk. The more that we can stay home, the better for our loved ones and community. Given this, I have rounded up a list of family activities that can be done virtually or socially-distanced/outdoors in Austin this month. I have focused on educational, cultural, and fun activities that are both free and fee-based so that you can choose the best fit for your family. Resources are listed by date order in each section, as applicable. While the list is relatively short given everything that is happening in our community, I hope it helps you and your kiddos find some connection and inspiration in these crazy times. In the highlighted resource section, I have also included some creative, virtual bonding ideas that you could facilitate for your kids.

Enriched Family December 2020 Austin Activities List

Hi friends! I’ve missed curating the Enriched Family monthly activities lists for you. COVID realities put a stop to my blogging for the past few months, but I am happy to be back at it. Obviously the holidays are different this year, but there are still many Austin holiday traditions and December events to enjoy. I have rounded up a post on at-home, online, or socially-distanced/outdoor activities for you and your kiddos (please refer to the event websites for complete COVID-19 safety information).

As always, I have focused on a variety of educational, cultural, and fun activities that are both free (though there are not as many as in years past) and fee-based so that you can choose the best fit for your family. Resources are listed by date order in each section, as applicable. As always, this list is not exhaustive, but includes a sampling of events and activities that caught my eye that I wanted to highlight. Additional good sources for activity lists are included at the end of the post.

I have also included a section with some winter camp ideas (both virtual and in-person), organized by area of Austin. Finally, if you are looking for ways to give back to our community this holiday season, check out the highlighted resource below: local charitable giving guides.

Back-to-School Amidst COVID-19: Family Organization Tips

It’s hard to believe we are headed back to school in the midst of a pandemic. If your children attend Austin ISD, they will not be starting back to school until September 8th. Students at other schools in the City of Austin or Travis County will be doing remote learning until at least September 7th. It is unclear what will happen beyond September 7th/8th. To help support your family in this “new normal”, I have created an updated and expanded post with back-to-school family organization tips specifically focused on prepping for back-to-school amidst COVID. This is not your typical school supplies, back-to-school clothes, lunch ideas type of post. I focus on a variety of information and resources specific to back-to-school in a pandemic, such as: setting up an ergonomic work or school station for all members of the family; supply recommendations for working and learning from home; how to ensure that you have sufficient internet bandwidth to handle all the Zoom calls; setting up the kids’ annual appointments and vaccine booster appointments (and options for this if you do not have insurance); tutoring and learning pod options; setting up the back-to-school schedule; household organization tips; strategies to support the dual career balancing act; and support groups for parents and teachers. As always, all information provided is based on Enriched Family’s independent research. Enriched Family does not receive any kick-backs or payments from any of the resources included below, nor do we accept advertising on our site.

If you are looking for information on alternative schooling options, check out our previous blog post, Enriched Family Roundup: Alternative Schooling Options for the Fall. As always, use the ideas that seem like they would be helpful to you and your family, and disregard those that do not. And bear in mind, you do not have to finish all of your organizing before the first day of school. Prioritize the most important things for your family and then ease into the rest as time allows.

Enriched Family’s August Activities List: At Home, Online, or Socially-Distanced

Hi, Austin parents! The end of the summer and the back-to-school transition is certainly going to be different this year. I have some information and resources coming your way to help with the school transition…keep your eyes on the blog! In the meantime, if you are looking for one last summer hurrah or some general family fun or new ways to entertain the kiddos, I have rounded up a post on at home, online, or socially-distanced/outdoor activities and resources in the Austin area for August. I haven’t done a monthly blog post on kids’ and family activities in Austin since COVID given the uncertainty of everything, as well as the need to quarantine. Like most of you, I have come to accept that there does not seem to be an end to this anytime soon, so I wanted to give y’all some safe family and kid activity options, as well as some parenting resources. As always, I have focused on a variety of educational, cultural, and fun activities that are both free and fee-based so that you can choose the best fit for your family. Resources are listed by date order in each section, as applicable.

Enriched Family Roundup: Alternative Schooling Options for the Fall

Austin parents, we have had a hard past few months and it doesn’t look like things are going to get much easier. After 4+ months of quarantine (to greater or lesser degrees), COVID rates in Texas are skyrocketing, and city, county, and state officials are considering a return to lockdown to prevent the ongoing spread. Having juggled online schooling, work, and childcare during the spring semester, it seems we will be back at it come fall. On July 14th, the City of Austin and Travis County enacted a joint order banning in-person classes for all schools through September 7th. What this means is that all students in the affected districts will shift to remote learning again, for at least the first three weeks of school, including students in the Austin Independent School District (AISD), Del Valle ISD, Eanes ISD, Lago Vista ISD, Lake Travis ISD, Manor ISD, Pflugerville ISD, and all other public school districts in the city limits and county of Travis. It is unclear what will happen beyond September 7th. If COVID has taught us anything, it is to not try to look too hard into the future as things are always changing. While I don’t want to be “gloom and doom”, it is important to acknowledge that this situation poses immense hardships for all parents, but particularly for working parents.

This post, therefore, is focused on rounding up a variety of alternative schooling options for the fall that parents can consider, whether temporarily (until in-person schooling starts again) or for the full fall semester and potentially longer. Options include a discussion of and resources on homeschooling; pod-type learning environments; nannies/tutors; small, private preschools or kindergarten programs; and YMCA child care for essential workers (a good option for the fall if your children are not yet of school age or if you need some summer childcare).

Parenting with Anxiety

I have managed anxiety (and periodic depression), to greater or lesser degrees, for most of my life. Nevertheless, I did not recognize my anxiety as a mental health issue for many years. For much of my life, I felt a sense of shame about my anxiety. I told myself if I was … fill in the blank … stronger, smarter, more resilient … I could “handle” my anxiety. It took age and experience to come to terms with knowing that I am incredibly strong, smart, and resilient, but sometimes anxiety still handles me. It wasn’t until I had my own children and they began to have some signs of anxiety that I recognized how intense my anxiety was from an early age.

While my anxiety is a challenge, it also comes with unique gifts. I am very sensitive and empathetic to other people’s emotions. I am a list-maker and planner extraordinaire. My hyper vigilance makes me a very safe and reliable person, as well as extremely detail-oriented and organized. I am an incredibly hard worker, highly focused, and push myself to excel. I also have a strong sense of responsibility. While these traits have many positives, they are also fairly exhausting at times.

Who knew that another gift of lifelong anxiety would be that it prepared me – at least to a certain extent – to deal with a pandemic? For me, the sky was always falling. Only now, everyone else sees it too. Oddly, there is a sense of comfort in knowing I am not alone in dealing with anxiety these days. So, if you have been dealing with anxiety all your life or are new to experiencing anxiety largely as a result of the COVID-19 situation and/or the current racial, economic, and social tumult in the United States, you are not alone. Maybe you don’t have anxiety, but someone you love does or you are parenting a child or adolescent with anxiety. This post is for you. While in no way meant to provide medical advice, this post provides salient information and resources related to anxiety from well-respected, credible sources. Given the ongoing issues of racial injustice and police brutality in our country, and in honor of July being Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, I have also included a number of resources specifically for Black communities and People of Color.
